Ways to Reduce Workplace Stress for Accounting and Finance Staff

Ways to Reduce Workplace Stress for Accounting and Finance StaffWays to Reduce Workplace Stress for Accounting and Finance StaffThe world of accounting and finance is filled with stressors, from regulatory compliance to new business demands. And stress can be good at times, driving your staff to be even more productive and embrace a were all in this together attitude to meet objectives and cross the project finish line. When the stress level becomes too intense and sustained, however, employees can suffer - and potentially, burn out.As a manager, theres a lot you can to do to help ease the pressure on your employees and even increase their job satisfaction. Here are seven ways to reduce workplace stress for your kollektiv1. Plan meetings with efficiency in mindWhen employees face pressing deadlines and impatient clients, the brde thing they want is to be pulled away from their work for a meeting that isnt a good use of their time. So, before scheduling meetings with your kollektiv, be sure to you ask yourself these three questionsIs this meeting really necessary? If you need to impart routine or non-urgent information, consider using memos or emails that workers can read on their own time. Save in-person meetings for major news, mission-critical project updates, ideation sessions or hashing out significant issues.Who needs to attend? Be strategic with your attendee list. Dont invite the entire team when only a few key players are needed.Whats the agenda? Every meeting should have a clear purpose. Outline the topics and who will discuss what (and for how long). Let attendees know the agenda a few days in advance so that they can prepare. These steps will help your workers be more engaged during the meeting - and less stressed about taking time out of their day to be there.2. Promote wellness at workOrdering pizza for your staff is always a fun way to relax and celebrate team success - or to boost morale when everyone needs to power through a working lunch or late-hours project. But to help fuel your employees through their day-to-day responsibilities, consider providing healthful snacks, like fruit and nuts, in the breakroom. If your budget allows, give your team access to or discounts for fitness programs and classes, either on- or off-site. (And give them ample time for those activities, too.)Why are these things important? Healthy people are typically better able to weather stress than those who are less mindful about their overall wellness or dont have enough time to focus on it. A comprehensive workplace wellness program can help employees maintain their health and well-being, and be ready to meet the challenges the workday brings. It also can be an effective recruiting tool for your organization 73% of workers interviewed for a recent survey said they consider health and wellness offerings when choosing a job.3. Assess your own work habitsIf you want to reduce workplace stress for your employees, setting a good example can do more than you might think. Are you always staying late at the schreibstube? Do you send department-wide emails on weekend mornings? When was your last vacation? Your employees are paying close attention to your habits - and following your lead. If youre constantly working rather than taking time out for yourself, they will do likewise. So, take a good look at your own everyday practices at work and, if necessary, make some adjustments. Whether its taking part in a lunchtime yoga class or leaving the office at a reasonable hour, explore ways to reduce your own stress levels. Your workers will follow suit. And together, youll make work-life balance a hallmark of your organizational culture.4. Ease commute pressureOne of the biggest sources of employee stress is the daily journey to and from work. A recent survey found that nearly one-quarter of workers (23%) have left a job because of a bad commute. And among respondents who reported that their commute has worsened in the last five years, 60% said their company had not helped to alleviate their commute concerns. You may, in fact, be able to ease this pressure point for your workers. For example, if your team members job responsibilities dont require them to be on-site at the office every day, allow them to work from home a day or two per week. Telecommuting programs are a much-appreciated perk that can also increase employee loyalty and improve retention rates.5. Enhance collaboration with tech toolsA company culture that values - and enables - collaboration and connectivity for all employees can create a more positive work environment. Workers who feel disconnected and isolated within an organization can experience heightened stress and low morale.Look for technology tools that can improve communication and encourage idea-sharing throughout your department. Some of the more popular cross-platform applications include Skype for Business, Google Hangouts, Slack, Asana and Trello. (These tools will also help a team o f telecommuters to stay productive and connected.)Chief financial officers interviewed for a recent Management Resources survey cited keeping pace with technology as one of the greatest pressure points impacting their finance teams. So, be sure to help your team learn new tools - and adapt to new ways of working. Doing so can reduce workplace stress for your staff, as well as keep your finance department running optimally.6. Bring in reinforcementsWorkers are under more strain than usual at certain times of the year, such as during tax season or the year-end close. Special projects can create pressure, too. Most accounting and finance organizations only have enough staff in place to handle day-to-day responsibilities. And adding just one unexpected assignment to the to-do list could quickly lead to work overload. So, if you want to reduce workplace stress for your employees, be proactive about providing them with extra support when they need it. Try to make room in your budget for a ugmenting your core team with interim professionals during peak periods. Engaging consultants for projects that require specialized skills and dedicated focus is another strategy. Some employers rely on a flexible labor force regularly to keep up with business demands. Flexible teams include full-time employees who are focused on critical initiatives interim and project-based professionals who support those workers, usually for a finite period and other specialized resources that provide additional capabilities and perform high-value work as needed. (Read more about the new labor model for finance here.)7. Foster open communicationIn todays go-go-go economy, some employees may be afraid to speak up about feeling overworked, worried that theyll be seen as not being able to handle their job. So, as a final tip, strive to create a workplace where staff members know they can raise a hand if theyre feeling overwhelmed. Promote a positive organizational culture that values honesty and wher e employees know they can express their concerns - and be heard and supported.Again, not all stress is bad. By helping your staff to maintain the right balance between pressure and productivity, your reward will be a team that has a positive attitude and gets more done.

4 Things to Consider Before you Resign

4 Things to Consider Before you Resign 4 Things to Consider Before you Resign My friend and the hiring manager had previously discussed a start date. And after a few weeks passed without receiving an official letter and confirmation of the start date, she was beginning to worry. Now, it wasnt so much that she figured the company had changed its mind (as I began to wonder after hearing her story) but because of her resignation letter. She needed to put in her two weeks notice, but when? The discussed start date seemed to be getting closer and closer without a definitiv from the employer, and as my friend explained, she did not want to run out of time to put in her resignation. This led me to think about the proper way to resign does such a thing truly exist?A February 2014 CNBC article referenced the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS report, which revealed that roughly 2.4 million employees quit their jobs at the end of 2013.And according to the Bureau of Labor Statistic s, there were 4.5 million total separations- quits, layoffs and discharges, and other separations- in June 2014. With the quits rate at 1.8 percent, that means roughly 81,000 people resigned from their jobs last month. With the number of employees voluntarily leaving on the rise, Im sure many have asked themselves the question, Is there a best way to resign? What I (and most people I know) learned was to always put in a two weeks notice- so much so that Ive been under the impression failing to do so was somehow illegal- or at least a sketchy business practice, like beginning a job without the employer first giving you a written job offer. But according to findlaw.com, employees dont necessarily have to give two weeks notices unless theyre employment agreement specifies a specific contract, which in that case it may help to do so.The article explainsMost workers in the United States are whats called at will employees. That means their employment contract can be ended at any time and fo r any reason. That right goes both ways. Just like your employer can fire you at any time, you can also walk in and quit at any time without giving any notice at all. Doing that wouldnt violate your agreement. Then again, there are also employees who are hired for a specific period of time. In that case, leaving early would likely break your contract. Depending on what your contract says, two weeks notice may not be enough to keep you out of trouble. With the rise of telecommuting, remote working and the contingent workforce, it just may be a good habit for all types of workers to draw up a notice before resigning. But, before you do, here are four simple things to considerDont put in your notice before you have received an official offer letter. In my friends case, although shed verbally been offered the job, she had yet to receive a written offer. Dont run and tell your babo youre quitting before you not only have a written offer for a new position but have accepted it. You dont want to quit your job in a rush, and unfortunately, your new job fall through. This, however, does not apply if you are not quitting your job because you have a new role lined up.Determine the best way to deliver the news. Telling your boss face-to-face that youre no longer going to be working for him/her seems like common sense, right? Yet, with how and where we work evolving, believe it or not, some people have never honigwein their boss in person. In a U.S. News World Report article, 8 Ways to Graciously Quit Your Job, Aaron Guerrero writesThe type of organization you work for and position you hold may dictate a different approach to how you break the news, says Sue Fox, author of Business Etiquette for Dummies.Fox went on to say, Guerrero writes, that its generally best to schedule a meeting and let your boss know in person. It just makes a better impression, Fox says, adding that it shows respect, self-confidence and that you have strong interpersonal skills. If youre a full-time rem ote worker or cannot meet in person with your boss or the company that has contracted you, at least schedule a Skype call with your boss before sending him/her the notice.Calculate estimated time between paychecks to ensure youre covered financially. If you for sure have to start a new job by a certain date, this step may not apply. But, if your new employer has given you some flexibility, ensure you look at your finances before deciding when to put in a two weeks notice. There will most likely be a gap between your last paycheck and your first check from the new job make sure you give yourself enough time to cover the costs.Be prepared for a counter offer. Also consider that your employer may present a counter offer once you put in your resignation. Are you certain nothing will keep you at your current job, or do you have a list of demands that, if granted, could change your mind about leaving? Consider a possible counter offer and how you would handle it before turning in your notic e. Think about the reasons youve decided to quit and be firm in your decision to leave- or to still leave if XYZ isnt included in a counter offer. You dont want to jump on a bigger number from your current employer without considering your other initial reasons for resigning.

What happens to reality TV contestants careers after the final rose

What happens to reality TV contestants' careers after the final rose What happens to reality TV contestants' careers after the final rose You love watching contestants make complete fools of themselves on television. But, if you’re anything like me, there’s always one question that plagues you: What the heck do these people do about their jobs? After all, how can they afford to take this much time off of work? Isn’t their employer embarrassed by their involvement in this sort of public debauchery?Wait, do these people even have jobs?Okay, maybe there’s more than one question that crops up. But, that’s only natural when all you have to go off of is that little blurb that displays those vague and oftentimes ridiculous job titles like “former pro quarterback” or- even worse- “socialite.”So, what’s the deal with these people and their day jobs? Does accepting a rose mean also accepting a major career setback? Does getting voted off the island mean you were already voted out by your employer?I knew I had to get to the bottom of what these reality TV contestants do about, well, real life. Not Your Average V acation Policy: Taking Time OffHere’s what the experts told me: How contestants choose to handle the time away from their jobs varies based on the person, the show’s contract, and the shooting schedule.“Often, a shooting schedule is much more condensed than it appears on TV, so reality show contestants are able to take leave from their jobs to appear on a show,” explains Dave DiVerniero, who has worked on international versions of network shows like Hell’s Kitchen and NYMD and is now executive producer at Black Chip Collective.  And, contrary to my guess, most companies don’t mind if their employees take some time off to be famous.“My impression is that, for the most part, their employers are excited for them.”Expect a lot of time away from the world“On our show, we did have an attorney contestant, and he took a long, unpaid leave of absence,” shares New York Times bestselling author, Heather Maclean, who appeared on MTV’s Road Rules in college and more recentl y on The Rebel Billionaire with Richard Branson.Unfortunately, that contestant was eliminated first, but, because he wasn’t allowed to spoil the show’s outcome, he was unable to actually return home. Instead, he lived in a hotel on St. Thomas for the entire four-month duration of shooting.“He took a huge gamble to leave his lucrative job for an adventure around the world, and it didn’t work out for him,” Maclean adds.DiVerniero adds that, while it’s not exactly common, it’s also not tremendously unusual for contestants to quit their jobs to join a show, particularly if they have seasonal or temporary positions, or if they believe the show could support a career path they desire more- like Hell’s Kitchen or American Idol, for example. What kind of money is in reality TV, anyway? This usually inspires another question: Are reality TV contestants paid? Well, that also depends.“You will usually be paid a stipend to take part, but the amount really depends upon the show,â € shares Jacqui Moore, Founder of Brits in the Box and a TV production executive who has worked on many internationally recognized reality programs, “at a minimum, the stipend would cover expenses and the equivalent of the minimum wage in the relevant state.”“The loss of wages is why you’ll see the contestant pool for shows like Survivor constantly filled with students, part-time workers like baristas, retirees, or actors. You’ll also get a lot of self-employed people, like real estate agents,” says Maclean. What happens when contestants return to reality?Participation in reality TV can have a big impact on fame and reputation- particularly for contestants who are involved in the bigger shows that are highly followed. But, despite that, many contestants return to their previous positions once shooting wraps.Tanner Tolbert, a potential suitor on The Bachelorette, returned to his role at a car dealership. Denise Martin, a contestant on Survivor: China, returned to her posi tion as a school custodian- not without a little bit of drama, though. So, people do, in fact, resume life as usual.“I would say 98% of people go back to their normal jobs,” Maclean says, “Maybe not right away. Everyone flirts with the press attention afterwards, but it’s fleeting. And, the marketplace is saturated now with people who’ve been on reality TV.”Reality TV as a way to launch a careerHowever, plenty of contestants aren’t content to head back to the same-old, same-old. Instead, they leverage their short-lived television appearances to launch entirely new careers.Snooki launched everything from her own tanning lotions, to perfume, to a clothing website- and that’s not even mentioning her numerous spinoff shows.Ali Fedotowsky may have quit her job at Facebook to star as The Bachelorette, but, she eventually moved to broadcast journalism- even enjoying a stint as an E! News correspondent. Believe it or not, Jamie Chung, who’s now a successful actress, was on the 14th season of MTV’s The Real World. Same for Jacinda Barrett, who has been in The Human Stain and Netflix’s popular Bloodline, and got her start on The Real World: London.  Maclean shares that many contestants hope to make up for their lost income with new sales and notoriety that comes after being on TV.“There’s a billboard near my house with one of The Bachelor contestants- from who even knows what season- holding a rose in front of her realty logo,” she says, “In cases like that, where the name recognition helps sales, she’s probably profited more from being on the show than she lost.”The Downsides: Everything’s Not Coming Up RosesDoes that mean participating in reality TV is a surefire way to skyrocket your career? Definitely not. That fifteen minutes of fame can be a blessing for some, but a curse for others.“It can be a great opportunity for those who want exposure, but the problem is that you will be signing a contract that does not give you any contr ol over the way that you are portrayed or edited, and this could actually be harmful to your career,” says Moore.“If you end up on a reality TV show, you will inevitably be playing a part,” she says. “Are you the hero or are you the villain, or anything in between? You will not have any control over this, so think carefully before signing up.”Jon Gosselin, formerly of the TLC show Jon and Kate Plus 8, has struggled to find work for years- not necessarily because of the show, but the way he behaved when in the public eye. Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino of Jersey Shore fame is now facing jail time for tax evasion. Olivia Caridi, the villain of her season on The Bachelor, blogged openly about the challenges she faced in finding a new job. What reality TV contestants need to considerFor some, reality TV ends up being the starting point of an even bigger and better career- making the time off of work more than worth it. But, for others? That tempting siren song ends up luri ng them into unsafe waters. If you’re thinking of having a fling with reality TV yourself, experts warn that there’s one thing you absolutely can’t neglect to do: Read your contract carefully. With press days and interviews, participation in the program can end up taking much longer than you originally anticipated- meaning you might run the risk of using all of your leave days. Even worse, your contract might restrict you from doing other things- including earning a paycheck- during the period between filming and airing. You also want to pay close attention to the fine print. “The early Shark Tank contestants gave away a 5% stake in their business or 2% lifetime royalty, whether they got investment from the sharks or not,” explains Moore. “Don’t let the excitement of 15 minutes of fame get in the way of having your contract checked by an attorney. You could end up signing away a huge part of your earnings and a huge part of your time.”

Rock-balancing guru teaches you how to trust yourself again

Rock-balancing guru teaches you how to trust yourself again Rock-balancing guru teaches you how to trust yourself again On the Airbnb experiences page of things you can do in San Francisco, you’ll come across a man promising to push you past your “limiting beliefs through the art of rock balancing.”This is another way of saying that Travis Ruskus, 27, is going to take you on  a beautiful hike on the Land’s End Trail to a beach and then he’s going to get you to do something you’ve likely never done before: arrange a pile of rocks into a structure that stays upright, like you wish you would.Hearing this, you may feel apprehensive or skeptical. What can putting rocks on top of each other teach me? But Ruskus says doing it flips your “‘I can’t’ into ‘I can.'”There’s a joy to  seeing something that should fall stand instead. The rocks have lessons in them. It’s saved him and he wants it to help save you.Ruskus  says he’s taught rock balancing to 5-year-olds and 95-year-olds, to “any race, religion, gender,” and what he’s noticed is that everyone gets the “exact same lo ok when [the rocks]  balanced…It’s like pure elation.” Ruskus says he can teach  anyone in a minute.Ladders talked to Ruskus about how to convert rock balancing non-believers, his career, and  how workers can apply the theory behind rock balancing to their own lives. From a cook to a stone  balancing artist This is what Ruskus will tell you in his conversion speech. A few years ago, Ruskus was in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado, standing halfway in a creek  full of rocks looking at his life, which had hit rock bottom. He had just been fired from his previous job as a line cook and had  gone through a painful  breakup. He needed something to believe in and he found it through holding a rock.Standing there shin-deep in water, he began to connect to “the abundant energy that surrounds us all.” He began to notice the nature surrounding him, the gravity and  weight of the rock in his hand, and less about the own weight of his problems.“The less I thought, the more I was able to feel the now and the present,” Ruskus said. He decided to challenge himself. “I wanted to balance a rock in the most difficult way possible, just to prove to God or whatever spirit that I had a voice…that I can do whatever I want.”And after about 45 minutes of frustration, he had exhausted his mind and balanced rocks into art.People began to notice Ruskus at the park  and take  photos of his structure. Ruskus wanted to take his “deep spiritual experience in the river” and share it.Fast-forward to Ruskus moving to San Francisco and monetizing his passion.Airbnb is helping Ruskus legitimize his passion and get people to pay for rock balancing. But Ruskus is aware that he needs to “walk a tightrope of not attaching myself too much to a brand, because that dilutes you as an artist.”Ruskus, like many artists, does other side jobs  with websites and digital marketing, but he says rock balancing is “the one that gets me to wake up in the morning.”Rock balancing teaches you how to say “I can do this”He cites one agoraphobic woman’s experience as particularly memorable. She was a client who had chosen to attend his Airbnb experience, but was hitting a wall. For Ruskus, he described it as noticing someone who had “been beating themselves up for so many years. and then t o have something you need to do, and you’re telling yourself, ‘I can’t do this.'”The woman began to panic, but through breathing exercises, she worked through it and by the end, had built a rock structure that was as big as her legs. It became  an  â€œexternal validation for the strength she had inside.”We all carry  self-defeating myths about ourselves that can become reality if we listen to them. That’s what rock balancing wants to shake people out of.“You can’t do a rock balancing halfway. You have to put everything into it,” Ruskus says about how his art  gets people out of their heads.Breathing exercises to balance rocks and balancing emailsFor people that don’t have rocks readily available, Ruskus still says you should “go find some rocks.” But there’s a breathing exercise he says you can use for balancing rocks and balancing the stress of emails.Drawing upon Chade-Meng Tan’s “three breath principle,” Ruskus believes anyone can create joy on dem and. In the first breath, Ruskus teaches his clients  to  breathe in and  â€œbring awareness of the oxygen in your body.” On the second breath, you breathe in and “just relax. Pretend there’s a CAT scan going from your head to your shoulders to your legs.” On the third breath, you breathe in and experience joy. Remember things that make you happy. For people on a sunny San Francisco beach, that’s easy. But Ruskus says workers can find it too. “The joy could be you just got paid, or your husband or wife had a good day, or you just had a good day.”Ruskus’ eventual goal is to get his work shown at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and transition to rock balancing full-time. Like with his clients, Ruskus has had to teach himself to eliminate self-defeating thoughts “because this gallery owner didn’t get back to me or yadda yadda yadda, but ultimately I know that they’re just excuses.”But whether or not he makes it to the SFMOMA, Ruskus is happy to know that he’s found his passion. “For me, I could be rock balancing the rest of my life, and I’ll be completely happy with that.”

This is why groups struggle with making decisions often

This is why groups struggle with making decisions often This is why groups struggle with making decisions often I recently got back from a motorcycle rally across the Sahara. There were 26 teams in the rally, and each one had a different plan. They ranged from extraordinarily detailed (my, admittedly older, group) to “Head west and hope for the best” (the younger folks).I found it interesting that while everyone was competing in the same race, there were multiple realities being used to plan the event. For example, there was one spot on the trip where we found ourselves facing a river that was overflowing onto the road and the connected bridge. We had to cross this bridge to continue, but the river made it tricky. To some, this was a sign of worse things to come and a reason to turn back. To others, it was just another obstacle to cross. No big deal. Even within our own group, we had divisions between the more adventurous and more conservative planners.I’ve been thinking about this since I got back- and have come to a conclusion about planning and making decisions in high-stakes situations :Even when everyone has the same goal, the focus and plans can be quite differentBy the second day of the rally, we were already a little behind schedule due to the fact that we simply weren’t traveling as fast as we’d planned.Everyone had different ideas about why we were going slower than anticipated and what could be done about it. That evening, half of our group decided to push on- to reach the next town before nightfall- while the other half decided to stay at the town we were in.The group who went ahead was focused on the plan. They were thinking about how to get back on track and meet the deadlines we’d set earlier. The group that stayed behind (my group) was focused on trying to understand the situation and how to react to it. Yet even within that unit, there was controversy. People had different assumptions about what was happening. Some were thinking about quitting, others were considering pushing on with the other group.Later that night, my group got a call from the people who had moved on. One of our friends had fallen and hit his head, and it was possible that he was badly hurt. Later, we learned that he was okay, but his motorcycle was broken- which meant that group ended up even farther behind waiting to get it fixed. The same situation, two very different outcomes. So, if you’re trying to achieve the best possible end result, how can you decide between the many different perspectives within a group? When you’re trying to make a decision, there’s no way to be completely objectiveWe all love being right.Right? The truth is, our decisions are filled with distortions and biases. It’s a difficult concept to internalize, but there’s no reason to believe your decisions are less biased than anyone else’s.However, don’t automatically assume that just because something is biased that it’s wrong. Bias is a distortion- often a lens that you use to make sense of the world.Take the investment world, for instance. Warren Buffett and George S oros are two of the best-known investors, but they have very different ways of looking at the world. Buffett is very focused on the margin of safety. He looks at how much downside protection he has, how many real assets are there, and things of that nature.Soros is very focused on the macroeconomic situation and gross economic assumptions. He’s not nearly as concerned with the balance sheet and hard assets in the way Buffett is.Neither one is wrong. They’re both very good at what they do, but they have their own conclusions. It’s the same world and same reality- but a different perspective. To understand how to make a decision, you have to triangulate the different viewsYou can use a change in perspective to your advantage. When you’re looking at a situation, it pays to think of how someone who’s different from you would assess the issue. It could be a friend you know well but who isn’t there at the time. It could be a coworker or a sibling. It could even be a historical f igure whose biography you’ve just read. No matter who you consult, all these examples are a form of reference class forecasting. There is quite a bit of research on this topic. Evan Polman, an assistant professor of medicine at Wisconsin School of Business, has published extensively on the topic, including his research published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Information Distortion in self-other decision making. One of the techniques he describes for improved decision making is to visualize your decision as someone else’s. This allows you to gain some perspective- to see the forest for the trees, in a sense.A different perspective can help balance your decision-making and allow you to see the situation through multiple lenses. The challenge then is to triangulate on the perspectives, understand the underlying reality, and change what you believe based on what’s happening, rather than what you want to happen. The difficult part, obviously, is not over-weighing your own perspective on the situation. It’s tough to treat every viewpoint as equally valid as your own, but it can be done. And if you can accomplish that feat, you can be confident that your high-stakes decision is at least a well-considered one. This article was originally published on Quora.

What is mindfulness And should I meditate

What is mindfulness And should I meditate What is mindfulness And should I meditate Do you regularly feel overwhelmed and restless? Do those feelings arise without a clear reason? It happens to all of us. During those moments, we feel bad. We make the wrong decisions. And we give in to our desires. All of us experience moments of weakness. Especially when we’re alone, not knowing what to do.In those moments, we whip out our phones and consume some crap on the news or social media. And that makes things worse.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  And all of a sudden, you start to question everything about life. Your mind is out of control.  And you can’t think straight anymore.  It’s a harmful state of mind. But we’ve all experienced the opposite as well: Being in the zone- fully focused on a single task.So why do we still experience those moments of overwhelm? It has something to do with someone who’s living in your head. The idiot that lives inside eve ryone’s headWe all have an idiot living inside of our head. It’s the inner voice that says: You’re not good enough You need to make more money You suck! Look at how successful others are Instead of getting consumed by the idiot that lives inside our head, we need to learn how to CONTROL that moron.Almost all philosophies share wisdom that we can use to tune out the idiot in our mind.  I’ve used Stoicism in the past to improve my mental toughness. But I have also been interested in the teachings of Buddism. I especially like Mindfulness, which is a pure way of looking at the world that’s obtained by meditation. What I’ve learned is that the world of Mindfulness is very rich, with many different traditions. One of the lessons is that there is no right or wrong way to meditate. The basis is to experience life in the present moment, without judgment. That’s why Mindfulness promises that you can experience life in the purest form.Because we often don’t experience life the way it is. We experience a version of life that’s colored by our thoughts.Mindfulness pioneers in the West are Thích Nh?t H?nh, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Bhante Gunaratana, and many more that believe in the power of this tradition. The science is also clear about its effects. The practice of Mindfulness has been used to reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression; it has a  positive relationship  with mental health.Meditation is not for everybodyBut does that mean Mindfulness is the right thing for you? After studying it for several years, I think everyone can benefit from the ideas. We live in a noisy world. And a little bit of inner calm and focus doesn’t hurt. But how should you go about Mindfulness? Should you meditate? Should you go on retreats? Visit a temple? Even though everyone can benefit from Mindfulness- how you apply it in your life varies for every person. It also depends on your life situation. For example, I’ve tried meditation several times. Also for longer periods. It’s just not for me because it made me feel depressed. But I still like the ideas of Mindfulness. So meditation is not for me. I think everyone should decide for themselves. Never do somethi ng just because other people say you should. Always make up your own mind. And keep learning. My favorite way to learn in general is by reading books. What you’ll find below are 5 books that I found useful. If you want to learn more about Mindfulness, these books will help you.1.  Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-ZinnKabat-Zinn is a professor of medicine who brought science in Mindfulness. He’s widely respected by Mindfulness teachers and his book, Wherever You Go, There You Are, serves as a perfect introduction to the practice. Highly recommended for people who prefer a practical and scientific approach to Mindfulness, which can be very esoteric.2.  The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thích Nh?t H?nhThích Nh?t H?nh is one of the most well-known Buddhist monks. And in his book, he shares his practical lessons for living in the present. It’s an excellent introduction to meditation. It’s also a short book that you can read in a day or two.3.  Stillness Speaks by Eckhart TolleTechnically not Mindfulness because Tolle says he doesn’t follow any tradition. Some people dislike his books because of that. But I found Stillness Speaks great. He does a good job at summarizing Buddhist teachings into short paragraphs. This book is more like a collection of aphorisms. Great to understand the concepts behind living consciously.4.  Waking Up by Sam HarrisSam Harris is mostly known for his controversial views on religion and politics. I’m not interested in that. I like his view on Mindfulness. He’s inspired by Jon Kabat-Zinn who said that using Mindfulness will wake you up. We’re so lost in thought that we live on auto-pilot. Sam Harris shares Mindfulness practices for people who are not religious or spiritual. Highly recommend if that’s you.5.  Mindfulness In Plain English by Bhante GunaratanaThis was my favorite book on the topic. Bhante Gunaratana does a great job in sharing the Mindfulness practices in a simple way. When you read the book, you can tell he wants the best for the reader. If you only decide to read one book on Mindfulness, make it this one. It shares the ideas behind the practice but also gives practical tips to become better at meditation.Remember, if you don’t like to read books, you can always listen to them with  Audible  (free trial). And most of these books are also available on  Blinkist  (25% off), where you can read or listen to the summaries.WARNING: Don’t read too muchYou know, this whole quest for knowledge, enlightenment, and more wisdom is a complex thing. When you read about the ideas in the above books, you will feel better about life. You will feel more at ease. But there’s a downside. When you always keep on searching for the next piece of wisdom, you’re doing it all wrong. At some point, you must get on with your life. Don’t make your whole life about this mindfulness and spirituality stuff. Also, every time I write about this stuff, angry people with meditation businesses attack me. T hey want to prove how much knowledge they have and how wrong I am. I don’t care about those idiots and never respond.I don’t have anything to sell here. I’m sharing my experience. What you do is up to you. At some point, I was  studying  Mindfulness and not  living  it. But I realized that’s not the purpose.I want to DO something with my life.Think about your own goals. And look for things that  support  your goals. If this stuff helps, use it, if not, don’t. At the end of the day, we all want a good life. With these books, you have enough tools to achieve that.Just remember to  use  the ideas and not to get stuck inside them. This article originally appeared on Darius Foroux. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

6 work opportunities that can surprisingly hurt your career

6 work opportunities that can surprisingly hurt your career 6 work opportunities that can surprisingly hurt your career A constant forward trajectory is an ideal path for your career. Unfortunately, career paths are rarely a straight line, often involving experiences that can end up being a step backward rather than forward. Even a salary increase or promotion, for example, could be considered a step back if it takes you away from your passions and talents.Maintaining a forward path is easier if you’re able to recognize opportunities that, despite some advantages, are ultimately a step backward in your career. Here are six examples.1. Receiving a promotion that detaches you from your passion and skillsIt’s hard turning down a promotion. Many of us need a steady income to cover the bills, so turning down a promotion seems counterintuitive to living life.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.In an ideal situation, you’ll earn a promotion to a position that utilizes your skills and passions, thoug h that’s not always the case. A promotion that shifts you to a department or task that doesn’t use your strengths can result in reduced work results down the line, transforming your position from secure to on the hot seat. Beyond that, an additional workload involving tasks you have no passion for can lead to increased workplace stress.2. Accepting a speaking opportunity for an unfamiliar topicPublic speaking presents an excellent opportunity for establishing new connections and leads. Showing your expertise via public speaking helps to build your brand and enhance your integrity. However, being tasked to speak about a topic you have no interest or experience with can do the opposite, devaluing your brand and potentially showing you as unprepared and not passionate. There’s nothing wrong with learning about a new topic to appear competent, though investing too much time and public attention on a subject beyond your specialty can detract from your actual goals and skills. If you r brand exists in too many niches, others may be skeptical if you may spread yourself too thin.3. Taking on a workload that presents no time for side projectsA promotion typically involves a heavier workload, though a job that removes any time whatsoever from your downtime is unhealthy. Side projects from some entrepreneurs, conducted away from or in the office, tend to evolve into successes. You can anticipate a heavier workload, though if it’s derailing a lucrative side project of yours, the workload may be doing more long-term harm than good.4. Working in an industry that doesn’t align with your long-term goalsReceiving a better role at work is technically a step forward in that industry, though if you were previously considering switching industries due to passion and interest, it could be a step backward. Despite a higher salary and glowing new title, you may spend ample time deliberating what could have been if you followed your passions. Ask yourself about the potential o f your current position, asking if being the CEO of your present company would satisfy you more than starting your endeavor with your passions and talents in mind. If not, the promotion may not be a positive thing, after all.5. Staying in a job that no longer presents learning opportunitiesDespite a higher salary and new title, your time spent at work can feel pointless if you’re learning nothing at all. Every industry is continually evolving, so even the highly experienced and knowledgeable in a specific niche should be learning at work on a daily basis. However, if your new promotion puts you in a position where you do the same thing day after day or are monitoring those who are similarly disinterested, the promotion can be a step back. You could be spending your time on a creative venture with greater potential instead.6. Having an increased role with more travelIf you love to travel and enjoy your job, then a promotion that involves ample travel can be a great thing. However, i f traveling stresses you out, the new role may not be a good fit, even if you don’t mind the actual work. Traveling abroad has numerous psychological impacts involving fatigue and lack of focus for some. Having to travel, on top of a more significant workload, can present a recipe for disaster and inefficient work results.Sarah Landrum is the founder of Punched Clocks, a leading career advice blog. How to Brand (or Rebrand) Yourself for the Job You Want

How to Brand (or Rebrand) Yourself for the Job You Want How to Brand (or Rebrand) Yourself for the Job You Want When you’re starting a job search, your goal is to make your credentials strong enough to get you selected for a job interview. Once you get to a job interview, you can sell yourself to the interviewer by confidently making the case that you’re an exceptional candidate. Before that though, what’s on your resume and cover letter is going to be the pitch that gets you picked for an interview. One of the best ways to achieve that goal is to brand (or rebrand)  yourself if necessary, so you’re a close match for the jobs you’re targeting. What does this mean? And how do you do it? What’s in a Brand? Branding (if you haven’t worked on creating a brand yet) or rebranding  (if you’re considering a job or career shift), means deciding what professional path you’re on and tailoring your credentials, expertise, and what’s visible to network connections and prospective employees, to match that brand. Your brand, besides showing what you’re capable of doing and where you’re heading, will show employers what you can bring to the table and how you will add value to their organization. How to Get Started The first step in creating or reinventing your brand is to determine what you want that brand to represent. What type of job would you love to have? Would you like a new job in a similar role or the same job in a different industry? If so, that’s a relatively easy brand update. If you’re looking for a career change, you’ll need to invest more time and energy into rebranding yourself. Check yourself out. Google yourself and check the results before you start making any changes. You will want to see how the current information available about you reflects your professional persona, and ensure that  it clearly reflects where you are in your career and where you want to go next. Look at it from the viewpoint of a hiring manager to see what narrative you are sharing about your achievements and aspirations.Make a plan. It’s important to figure out how you’re going to get to where you want to be. Does your career need a makeover? Do you need new skills or certifications? Or can you tweak your brand and update it so it’s a fit for where you want to go next? Make a list of what you need to do before you get started. There are things you can do at your current job to position yourself for success in the next one. If your career needs a major overhaul, it will require more planning and a bigger investment of time. Upgrade your credentials. Are you short on the skills you need to make a successful brand switch? If you can carve out some time, it can be easy to gain the skills you need to bolster your qualifications. There are many free and low-cost classes you can take to get the career skills you need. Once you’ve upgraded your skill set, take on some freelance projects to create a portfolio of skills related to your rebranding objective. You can add those skills to your resume and LinkedIn, and refer to them in your cover letters. Be careful. As with a job search when you’re currently employed, be careful about the changes you make that are visible to your current employer. For example, if you’re working in sales, you don’t want your Twitter feed to be all about product development. Gradually mix in the new topics if you’re using social media for business purposes. Make sure “Share with network” is turned off while you’re updating your LinkedIn profile if you’re connected to current  colleagues. If you make changes slowly and carefully, it’s easier to stay under the radar. Create a Branding Statement A branding statement is a short  and catchy statement that encompasses what makes you a strong candidate for a job. Writing a branding statement can help you to  capture the essence of what you want to accomplish in the next phase of your career. Taking time to write your own statement will help you to  focus on what you want to accomplish with your branding or rebranding. Add a Branding Statement to Your Resume Adding a branding statement to your resume is a way to show employers how you can add value to the organization if you were to be hired. Don’t use the same branding statement every time you use your resume to apply for a job. If your branding statement isn’t a perfect match for the job, take the time to tweak it so it reflects the attributes the employer is seeking. As with all job search materials, it’s important to show the employer how youre among the best-qualified candidates for the job. Update Your LinkedIn Profile Also, update your LinkedIn profile. It doesn’t have to match your resume exactly, but it should be close enough to pass scrutiny because employers will check  it. Take time to write a summary that’s informative, reflects your career interests, and will grab hiring managers  attention.   Check Your Other Social Accounts Too Is the message you’re sending to recruiters and networking connections consistent? When they look at each of your various public social media accounts will they get the same impression? Consistency is important when you’re using social media for career development. Using the same professional photo across platforms will help to  build your brand. Rebrand Yourself (Carefully) When you’re thinking about a major job shift or a career change, rebranding might be in order. Rebranding is something you should do slowly and carefully if you’re currently employed. You don’t want to advertise to your current manager, other employees of the company, or clients  that you’re rebranding your credentials and seeking new opportunities. That way you won’t jeopardize the job you have, and you can move on when you’re ready. Gradually change your LinkedIn page Making small changes over time  will be less noticeable. For example, you could gradually change your LinkedIn profile by reworking some of your job descriptions to fit better  the brand you’re aiming for. They should still reflect what you did at each job, but the focus can shift.Update your LinkedIn headline The headline section of LinkedIn is designed for short, descriptive text. Use that to highlight the skills you have that match your goals. Again, don’t get too far off-base from your current role if you’re employed. If you’re not currently working, you’ve got some more flexibility in how you write your headline.Rework your resume Another option is to keep your LinkedIn job descriptions brief and vague. Instead of changing LinkedIn, you can tweak your resume to match better  with  each position you’re applying for. There won’t be a noticeable difference to current or prospective employers. There are small  and simple, but very po werful changes that you can make that can have a big positive impact. Use Your Cover Letter to Explain What’s in your cover letter is between you and the hiring manager  reading it. Employ your cover letter to tell the story of your career pivot. Write a targeted cover letter that highlights your strongest accomplishments and assets that qualify you for the job,  helping to convince the hiring manager that you’re well worth interviewing. Start All Over Again Rebranding your career isn’t a one-time deal. Technology changes, the economy goes up â€" or down, in-demand skills change over time, and most people’s career aspirations change along the way. The average person changes jobs 10 -15 times over their career. Your career will most likely shift over time  too. As you gain additional work experience, take a course, or otherwise learn new skills, add them to your resume and LinkedIn profile. Tweak your job descriptions as you move forward so they reflect where you are going, as well as where you’ve been. By making some slow and steady changes your rebranding will be a work in progress, and you’ll be able to use your brand successfully  to boost your career.
